2006-2007

September 2006 Improving College Access & Success Conference - PCAS joined with the UTC Counselor Education Department to offer a two-day conference that enhanced the knowledge base of those who promote access to, and success in, higher education for Chattanooga youth.  Read more.

Senior Retreats at UTC for: Sale Creek School, Nov. 7th;  Red Bank High School, Nov. 8th; and Howard School of Academics and Technology, Nov. 10th. Approximately, 250 students were served during these retreats as they received information on preparing for and financing college, as well as alternative postsecondary options.

2005-2006

March 2006 - A workshop sponsored jointly by PCAS and the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling was held at Sale Creek Middle/High. This program featured Jason Dorsey, a nationally known motivational speaker for first generation rural students. After his address to all Sale Creek students (grades 6-12), the high school students left to visit area colleges and universities while the PCAS program participants stayed for an energizing series of sessions. Topics included:

• Programs to Make Counseling Life Easier
• Working with Student Athletes
• Basics of a Good College Counseling Program
• Helping Students Present Themselves in the College Process
• Planning a Great College Tour
• Academic Readiness: Using ACT’s EPAS Program
• Helping Students Find the Right College for Them
• Counselor Database Management Training
• Seamless Transitions from Middle School to College

April 2005 – Joint retreat with PCAS and SNS (Schools for a New Society) enabled school leadership teams to look at data on college going rates for their individual schools as well as the district. Sharon Camblin, from Pathways to College Network, shared planning tools from the College Readiness for All Toolbox to help leadership teams set goals and plan activities for the school year.

December 2005- A program at Howard High School featured Cedric Jennings, the subject of Ron Suskind’s book, A Hope in the Unseen. Cedric spoke to the partnership in the morning, and each participant received a copy of the book, an inspirational account of Cedric’s journey from a failing inner city high school to an Ivy League university. Cedric had dinner with a small group of Howard seniors the previous evening and spoke to the entire Howard student body in the afternoon.

September 2005 – A workshop held at Red Bank High School included an address by Dr. Roger Brown, the new chancellor at UTC.  Dr. Brown’s compelling story of being a first-generation college student kicked off the series of sessions, which included the following topics:

• New Statewide Initiatives in College Access
• Students Speak Out
• Scholarships and Financial Aid
• Work Force Skill Development
