Summer College Outreach Internship Opportunity

The Chattanooga Partnership for College Access & Success is looking for rising college sophomores and juniors who are first-generation college students to serve as paid summer college outreach interns.  These students will be assigned to work with specific self-selected high school students at Howard, Red Bank, Sale Creek and Brainerd High Schools to encourage and assist them with their college-attendance dreams.

Interns will work closely with the College Access Center, their assigned high school and the local community to develop a plan and facilitate a summer-long project that would encourage high school students to attend college after graduation. After a mandatory 1-week training held over spring break, interns will work a total of 5 days in the schools between spring break and final exams this term. Then, interns will be expected to have at least 15 contact hours per week with assigned students throughout the summer. Financial incentives will be given for additional preparation hours that will be expected for each contact hour as well.

Interns will design their own plan while working closely with College Access Center staff to develop and revise plans as needed. Over the summer, interns will also be expected to attend a one-hour mandatory update meeting each week.

Applicants must be full time rising college sophomores or juniors and first-generation college attendees. We are seeking students who are self-starters who are reliable and responsible and feel comfortable working in a variety of environments. We are looking for well-organized hard workers who have excellent oral and written communication skills and are comfortable speaking in front of an audience. Selected students will need to be in good academic standing and have a commitment to helping students in communities like their own to discover the possibilities for post-high school education.

All applications are due before January 15 and all references should be sent directly to Stacy Lightfoot by January 15.  Interviews will be conducted in January and interns will be notified of their selection by February 19. Interns will receive bonus pay for extra prep work prior to each contact hour and are also eligible for an end of summer bonus incentive for exceptional outreach results. Applicants are expected to:

  • Submit the attached application form
  • Submit recommendation forms (1 from a faculty or staff member at your college and one from a non-family member who is from your community or high school). It will be helpful to provide your recommenders with a copy of this job announcement as well. And they should submit the recommendation directly to Stacy Lightfoot rather than to you.
  • Submit typed answers to the requested brief essay questions
    • Why did you choose to attend college?
    • What obstacles and challenges did you face in applying to and in attending college?
    • How would you propose to encourage others from you’re a community like the one in which you grew up to consider college as a viable and desirable option after high school?
